Syracuse
University lost 30 alumni as a result of the terrorist attacks
on the United States. They are our fellow alumni who, like
many of us in years past, hurried out of the cold to get
to class; cheered on the Orange athletic teams; stopped
at the top of the Mt. Olympus steps to catch a breath; or
took a moment on the Quad to listen to the Crouse Chimes.
They will remain in our hearts forever.
Many of our alumni were more fortunate.
In the days following the disaster we heard countless “near
miss” stories from people who were out of the building for
a meeting, or running late and just stepping out of the
subway station as debris rained down. Milliseconds made
the difference between life and death that frightful day,
and we were overwhelmed by the concern shown by SU alumni
for each other all over the world.
We mourn our lost alumni; there are
no words that can ease our pain or that of their loved ones.
You may not have known all their names, but you are connected
by a strong bond. As Syracuse University alumni we’re all
part of a caring, global community that shares both joy
and sorrow. On September 11, we experienced sorrow of immeasurable
scale. In the days that followed, we found some solace in
each other.
May those we lost be at peace and know
that they were truly loved.
Lil Breul O’Rourke ’77
Associate
Vice President for Alumni Relations
The
Syracuse University community was deeply affected by the
terrorist acts of September 11. Some of our alumni died
at the World Trade Center and Pentagon, perished aboard
one of the airliners used in the attacks, or sacrificed
their lives in service to others. Our condolences go out
to their families and friends.
