Zero
Photographer’s
Mate, 2nd Class (Aviation Warfare) Jim Watson ’99 and Journalist,
1st Class Preston Keres ’00, two of the photographers whose work
is featured prominently in this issue, were among the first Naval
personnel off the helicopters in lower Manhattan on September 11.
Both are graduates of SU’s Military Photojournalism Program, which
is offered by the Newhouse School’s Department of Visual and Interactive
Communications under the direction of Professor Dow Smith. The program’s
stated goal is "to help military photographers become great
photographers." Students are put through an intensive one-year
regimen of writing courses and photography lab training.
