Travers Stewart couldn't find the academic program he wanted at Syracuse University, so he created it. Stewart entered SU in fall 1995 as a dual aerospace engineering and international relations major. After a year, however, he decided engineering wasn't for him. He was still enrolled in international relations, but wanted to add another major. He had a long-standing interest in Japan and China, and decided he wanted to focus more in-depth on that area of the world.
