SU scientists seek to understand the complex world of cellular communication

On the Cover: This biofilm sample of the bacterium Myxococcus xanthus was produced in the laboratory of biology professor Roy Welch by doctoral student Rion G. Taylor. When starved, the cells of an M. xanthus biofilm coordinate their movement, creating visible dynamic patterns that form multicellular structures called fruiting bodies. Welch and his research team are studying how this self-organization occurs at the genomic level. As part of their research, they are involved in an interdisciplinary project at SU investigating the genetics behind how M. xanthus produces toxic molecules that kill other bacteria and single-cell organisms that it feeds on.
