Syracuse Eight Gathering

Members of the Syracuse 8 gather with the family of the late John Godbolt (front row), and radio talk-show host Bobby Ramos at a book-signing for Leveling the Playing Field: The Story of the Syracuse 8 (Syracuse University Press, 2015) at the University of Bridgeport this spring. They appeared at an event hosted by Ramos to share their story about boycotting the 1970 spring football practice and how it impacted their lives. Pictured (second row, from left): Clarence “Bucky” McGill ’72, Dana Harrell ’72, G’73, Ron Womack ’71, John Lobon ’73, Ramos, and A. Alif Muhammad ’71 (formerly Al Newton). Not present was Greg Allen ’73. Godbolt, a Bridgeport native and school sports star there, died in 2011. Two other members, Richard Bulls ’73 and Duane Walker ’80, passed away in 2010.

Ready for Football

Otto helps ESPN broadcaster Sean McDonough ’84 (right) and football analyst Jon Gruden with the bonding process at an ESPN event in New York City. McDonough, who was recently honored with the Marty Glickman Award for Leadership in Sports Media by the Newhouse Sports Media Center, takes over as the new play-by-play voice for ESPN’s Monday Night Football when the 2016 NFL season kicks off this fall. McDonough replaces fellow Orange alum Mike Tirico ’88, who signed on with NBC, and will be joined in the broadcast booth by Gruden.
