Several alumni who reside at Asbury Methodist Village, a wellness retirement community in Gaithersburg, Maryland, gather in September for a luncheon hosted by the University. Those in attendance included Jean Young ’44 (WSM), Sally Duncan ’45 (A&S), Joan Dunlop ’51 (A&S), Janet Garman G’73 (EDU), George Huson ’50 (E&CS), Peggy-Ruth Lawrence ’49 (VPA), and Lois Lord G’49 (EDU).
Spirit of Hope Award
Retired U.S. Coast Guard Commander Michael J. Smith G’86 (NEW) was presented the annual Spirit of Hope Award by the Department of Defense at a Pentagon ceremony in Washington, D.C., in September. The award is presented to individuals or organizations who embody the core value of legendary entertainer Bob Hope: duty, honor, courage, loyalty, commitment, integrity, and selfless dedication. Smith was nominated for the award by the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan and supported by the commandant’s office.
